The Mental Notebook

A workbook to carry your notes in your head

Studying for an important test?

Link what you need to know to ten pictures you can see, and carry it in your head.

Use it to remember a lot of information for tests or work. Rick Tew uses this system to remember things like the 106 chemical elements and their atomic mass past the decimal point, and 100 new vocabulary words. Five steps, the method behind each one, and the sheet.

She writes her list, then leaves it at home. She links each thing to an odd picture. At the store, she sees each picture. She remembers all ten, with no list.

Questions

What if I forget one?

See its number's picture first: seven is key, and key is...? If you cannot see the scene, make it odder: bigger, louder, moving.

Can I reuse the same numbers?

Yes. Your mind works like a whiteboard: a new list goes over the old one, and the pictures stay. To keep both, put the new one on new numbers, such as 11 to 20.

How long does this take?

Give the ten sounds and the ten pictures an evening. After that, give a list of ten a few minutes. Grow 11 to 20 another day.
